As much as I hate to admit it, Australian Rules Football is probably one of the greatest things ever invented. I was raised in an Aussie Rules family and despite my public embodiment of nerd cultureI did actually play football for my primary school in grades 3, 4 and 5.

But I turned away from it in my early teens when it dawned on me that the kids that played football were generally the same ones who were bullying me. Though that is a big part. Nothing else in Australia has such wide appeal. The typical footy fan could be male or female, of any age, race or cultural background.

AFL is probably the only thing that can cause the same excitement in a 7-year-old boy from Darwin and an octogenarian war widow from Bendigo.

What will they do during the off-season? They may even eventually need a second channel for all the unused slow motion footage.

Do they keep all of that? Their hard drives must be huge! Football - and sport generally - never fails in Australian media. But what is the longest-running late night variety show on Australian television?

In Melbourne, the show even has a two-year waiting list for studio audience tickets. Radio too has realised that sport is a safe bet. Triple M has also moved towards more sport-focused breakfast shows, much to the chagrin of proper comedy fans.

Some people base their whole identity around their favourite footy team. They wear the club scarf, they worship big posters of their favourite players, they have the custom car number plates and all they ever want to talk about is football. The same people years ago were probably religious fanatics.A severe dust storm has hit NSW which has caused a public health warning has been put in place for Sydney and Canberra, as concerns a repeat of the famous dust storm could be on the cards.
